One test, two lives changed
Five years ago, Keri took a proactive step for her health and completed a cardiac calcium scoring test. Her results looked good, and she didn't pursue further cardiac follow-up.
Just a few months ago, Keri's mother, Christy, began experiencing fatigue. Her primary care provider referred her to Jen Law, NP, with Centennial Heart at Horizon. Given Christy's family history of heart disease, Jen recommended further testing — a decision that ultimately saved her life.
As part of Christy's evaluation, Jen ordered a cardiac calcium scoring test. The results revealed significant concerns, leading to additional testing and bypass surgery just two weeks later.
Witnessing her mother's experience inspired Keri to revisit her own heart health. At the recommendation of her primary care provider, she met with Jen and completed another cardiac calcium scoring test.
While Keri's results did not require a procedure, they revealed an elevated risk for a future cardiac event. Armed with that information, she can now take proactive steps through lifestyle changes and medication to help reduce her risk before more serious intervention is needed.
For Keri, the lesson is clear. "My mom's test saved her life, and my test gave me information that could help prevent a serious heart event in the future," she said. "I can't stress enough how important it is to get checked and follow through on the testing your provider recommends."
Today, Keri is sharing her family's story in hopes of encouraging others to take charge of their heart health.
What is cardiac calcium scoring?
A cardiac calcium scoring test is a non-invasive CT scan that measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, helping physicians assess a person's risk for heart disease and future cardiac events.
Cardiac calcium scoring is available at both TriStar Horizon Medical Center and TriStar Natchez Imaging Center. The test is only $45, including interpretation of results and a physician order is not required.
