About kidney cancer

Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, occurs when abnormal cell growth in the kidneys causes a lump or tumor to form. Kidney cancer can be treated with a combination of immunotherapy, surgery, targeted therapy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Types of kidney cancer

Kidney cancer comes in various forms. The most common types include:

  • Renal cell cancer: Also known as adenocarcinoma or hypernephroma, this is the most common type of kidney cancer. Smoking and misuse of certain pain medications can increase your risk of developing this type of cancer.
  • Wilms' tumor: While it can affect older children and adults, it is most common in children less than five years old.
  • Transitional cell cancer of the kidney or ureter: This type of cancer begins in the transitional cells of the renal pelvis, the part of the kidney where urine collects before it goes down to the bladder.

Kidney cancer diagnosis

Imaging scans and diagnostic tests can help your doctor determine whether you have kidney cancer. These tests are usually performed for other reasons, but can be helpful in detecting cancer-related abnormalities and may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Image-guided biopsies
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans

Kidney cancer treatment

Once you have a confirmed diagnosis, your doctor will collaborate with oncologists and kidney specialists to develop the best treatment options for you. Your care plan may include:

  • Specialized surgery
  • Embolization
  • Tumor ablation
  • Radiation therapy or other biological therapies
